PR professionals urged to go to their audiences

During the first session at this morning’s Don’t Panic Guide to Social Media, delegates heard from Microsoft Ireland’s Tom Murphy and Edelman’s Marshall Manson.
Perhaps unusually for a seminar on this topic, Mr Murphy, who has been a blogger since the early noughties, was somewhat dismissive of some of the new tools and trends.

Calling Twitter “sad” he also accused so-called social media experts as not living in the real world.
However he did go to praise its ability to measure across many metrics for people interested in audience behaviour and trends.
Mr Manson on the other hand urged the audience, mpst PR professionals from across Britain, to start engaging with clients in the manner of a guest at a party.
“We are very good at a ‘build it and they will come approach’ but my top tip is to go to where your audience is, fish where the fish are”.
I shall blog more updates later in the day and in the meantime there is a live stream on Twitter using the hashtag #dontpanic which you can see here.
