Thingy of the week: Paint my album

spice girls by andrew gledhill.jpg It’s a website, a Facebook group and a YouTube channel that has a loyal viewers from afar afield US, Australia and the Czech Republic.
Paint my Album does what it says – features people’s paintings of famous album covers and has already attracted almost 700 submissions.
The project was started by 24 year-old stand-up comedian and writing student Anthony Richardson and Diarmuid White, 22, who is studying Medicine at Manchester.
The Withington duo started it after amusing themsleves during a boring summer job which gave them access to a computer and MS Paint.
Anthony explained: “Diarmuid tapped me on the shoulder and showed me a picture he’d drawn. He looked very pleased with himself. ‘What’s this?’ he asked. It looked like a drowning nun.
“’It’s Never Mind, by Nirvana,’ he said. I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was rubbish.
“We started the Facebook group as a bit of a joke, and just for our own amusement, but strange people we’d never met stared joining it. Now we have 2,048 members and 683 covers.

”We then made ourselves a challenge – 2,000 covers by Dec 23rd. It’s a bit unlikely, but at least we’ll have passed the time!”
Since then they’ve branched out to video (see the latest show below) and found a whole new worldwide community of album painting fans.
“We started our Youtube show Paint My Album, because we wanted a new way to appeal to artists to come forward. It’s worked, and people seem to love drawing stuff to be critiqued” said Anthony
“There are people in Perth and Missouri that get angry if our show isn’t out every Sunday. I’ve never met these people, and may never will, but I’m genuinely touched by their loyalty.”
And if they achieve the 2,000 album goal, maybe it won’t stop there – the pair are even considering the possibility of an exhibition.
You can find out more or submit your artwork at Paint my Album.
We will be hunting around for blogs or websites to feature here and in the MEN’s e-view page every Saturday as well as add to the blogroll so, if you’ve got one to nominate, submit a link below. The only criteria is that they have some connection with Manchester.

This is amazing. The show is brilliant. They just look at people’s artwork and make observations about it, but in such a funny way. I laughed at this for hours. What a brilliant day!
