Second was a great point from Five Live's Brett Spencer – throughout the session the terms multimedia journalist, tri-platform journalist and so forth were all regularly used, and Spencer rightly asked at what point we stop using those terms, and just use the term journalist. A fair point and one of my own particular bugbears, particularly in these multi-platform days.

Now to the issue of payment. Some attendees thought that “citizen journalists” are inherently amateur and should not be paid—presumably because it undermines the professional. Amateurs will likely accept any price they are offered for a photo for example—partly because they don’t know how much it might actually be worth, and partly because something is better than nothing. This threatens to drive down the prices paid to professionals, as news organizations have access to cheaper materials.
