t’s an attractive catch for an editor as it’s a fiercely loyal readership and not a paper that likes to rock the boat. It’s also an area with little competition – the Sun, Daily Record and so on are all seen as secondary purchases to a P&J. It may not innovate much in terms of digital, but that’s a growth area (and besides the main readership is not iPad users I would wager.
Having said that, what a rich opportunity for digital.

We heard from Barry Forde, the designer of the CLEO (Cumbria & Lancashire Education Online) network, about how there can be fibre cables in surprising places that might make it easier to connect rural locations than we might imagine, and we heard from Miles Mandleson and John Bevan about the Great Asby Broadband network, which is solving the connectivity issue in the host village, and working towards its objective to provide fibre to the home (FTTH) for all its residents.

"Here's the problem: The hyperlocal content everyone focuses on is news. But advertisers are not looking for content; they're looking for an audience and certain [consumer] characteristics," said Gordon Borrell, CEO of Borrell Associates, a research firm that specializes in local advertising. "I still have worries about sites like Patch.com or other hyperlocal news sites attracting much less valuable audiences [for advertisers]."
