The site will feature aggregation and curation, as well as partnerships with other local sites. The goal is to create a one-stop shopping venue bringing together lots of content about the Philadelphia region, regardless of source. “We want to become where you go first thing in the morning,” he says.
There also will be original content from Brother.ly’s modest editorial staff of six, which will be headed by Chris Krewson, former editor of Variety.com and onetime executive editor, online, of The Philadelphia Inquirer. While the site won’t launch until the fall, it’s likely Brother.ly will roll out some content before that.
The outlet’s aspirations stretch well beyond just the facts. There’s a strong civic impulse. “We want to help Philadelphia become a better city,” Brady says. “We want to give people the tools and connections to help make that happen.”
Brady, who’s seeking an audience that skews young, says that approach “will tap into the strong desire of young news consumers to not stop at the water’s edge but get involved and take action.”

The BBC itself is an example of just how anxious news organisations are about being a platform for others: its local news sites now automatically pull in headlines linking to local newspapers’ articles – but hyperlocal sites are excluded entirely.
