Talking about dying? An arts challenge

Do you shy away from talking about dying? I certainly do and when I speak with others, turning the topic to something else is a common reaction. So when tasked with helping an arts organisation get publicity for a one-night only screening of a film about a dying actor, it looked like a challenge.

But then I watched the trailer above.

I also talked with someone who knew the actor David Gale and I realised there was a moving and profound story behind the film. It turned out that his somewhat eccentric approach to ageing inspired a whole new approach to arts provision hundreds of miles away. Londoner David’s impact on North Yorkshire’s rural communities was a story waiting to be told. And although he will never know the way he changed lives, at least his nephew and filmmaker Simon Chambers will be able to see that impact first hand when he visits Rural Arts in Thirsk for the screening tomorrow.

You can check out the full story of how David’s story changed artistic opportunities for older people in North Yorkshire via stories carried by many regional news outlets in the past week, including The Northern Echo here.

And if you’re in the area, tickets are available here and I’ll see you there tomorrow!
