Earlier this month the best of the blogs was announced at a well-attended evening in Matt and Phreds. You can find the winners here.
Now that all the excitment of the announcement has passed I thought it was time to take a closer look at each of the winners starting with the Best Personal Blog: Single Mother on the Verge.
Written by a Rochdale based blogger who describes herslf as a storyteller, this blog is a veritable soap opera.
There’s even a cast list included with characters such as Damien: Jack’s Father (bit of nutter), Domino Clive: Rabbit, Eleanor: Stepmother and, of course, Idris: Bedfellow who has a starring role and was apparently snapped doing the washing in this cheeky picture.
As the name suggests this blog is the everyday stresses and strains of life and relationships. It all seems to have been started in March with this lovely description of our narrator and her partner.
“Idris and I have innate insurmountable difficulties: I’m feminist and he’s a health food enthusiast, all I want to do is eat biscuit after biscuit, he won’t eat sugar, wheat, eggs, milk, or processed food. The minute I leave the house I salivate for a T-bone steak. I’m a control freak and he’s an anarchist. We’re all odds and ends. After a day working with my testosterone mental boss I want to drink wine, smoke and watch Hotel Babylon. Meanwhile, Idris slides into his slippers then slopes into the garden to practice Qi Gong. Sometimes I call him darling, most of the time I call him the Fun Police.”
The blog is humourous and touching with regular updates and engages with themes everyone can relate to. On a design front, I personally dislike reading anything on dark and busy backgrounds but, even with this visual annoyance, I found it compulsive reading.
I just wish there was more in the profile – it’s strange to know so much about a person without knowing who they really are.
