I am not Sarah Hartley. Contrary to expectations, I’m not even a professional writer or MEN employee.
My name is Paul Robinson. I’ve been asked by Sarah to co-blog with her from now on to “The Mancunian Way” and pontificate on all things technical and geek-related. With the rise of the online scene and home-grown online talent in Manchester, it was thought that somebody with experience of being close to the ground around the Manchester technology scene might help make sense of it all.
I hope I’m qualified to tell you about the geekier side of Manchester being a confirmed propellor-head most of my life.
For example, I work in the city centre running my own business as a software developer and consultant. I go to pretty much every event on the local ‘tech’ calendar (I even organise a few). I know more than a few of the geeks toiling away in the city. I have of course spent more time drooling over immaculately designed pieces of plastic over the last decade than is perhaps healthy for a young man. I’ve also written a few blogs myself over the years, so I hope I can string a sentence or two together.
So what am I going to add to this corner of the web? I have strong links to local technology tinkerers, a deep interest around Manchester’s history of innovation in all things spinny and whirry, and I love the local blogging scene. I also keep my ear close to the ground on what the Next Big Thing out there on the net might be and how Mancunians might use it for the purpose of World domination. Bits of all that, then.
I hope you’ll participate in this little experiment by commenting and let us know what you think as we go along.
Who knows, I might even inspire you to muck in and get involved yourself. What’s that you say? You? A potential geek? We can only hope…
Welcome – I better update the title page then!

its nice to know that someone new is going to be posting their views on technology in Manchester.
Could you maybe tell us something more about yourself Paul, have your worked in industry or journalism before, or are you just a ‘bedroom blogger’ ?

Peter – no professional journalism in my background, but I’ve blogged for my business before. My background is almost entirely technical, but I love writing – I’m rare as a developer in that I look forward to writing documentation during a project.

Hi Paul,
Welcome to a great named blog. You could have easily changed the name as you’re a sub domain of the MEN. Then I could have nicked/used it!
You’re not totally alone on liking writing as a developer Paul.
I used to write documentation for my projects and I enjoyed it so much I used to even write little papers on how to do the more complex IT stuff so people who followed after me could support my developments more effectively!
