There’s a buzz around the place at the moment – and that buzz is social media! In various quarters – including my twitter bubble and even face-to-face meetings – the idea of creating a social media cafe for Manchester keeps being floated.
So I thought I’d float it here and see what sort of take-up it gets.
How would it work? I’m not entirely sure as that would be for those keen enough to get this off the ground to decide.
One example that’s been mentioned is The Tuttle Club which operates in London. There the concept is described as “a loose association of people finding a way of working better together both online and off.”
There also a Social Media Cafe in Birmingham where “people interested in social media to gather, get acquainted, chat, plot, scheme, and share” on a monthly basis.
I’d invisage something similar here – a group of interest to those of us who use social media tools and Web 2.0 in general for communicating, experiementing and generally pushing the boundaries of digital experience.
It would be an opportunity to share experiences and meet-up with others operating in the same fields.
One thing’s for sure – ours would be a very Manchester version – there’s just too much creativity in this city to be constrained by convention!
If you’re interested in helping to form such a group, let me know one way or another – posting a comment on this blog would be a great way of adding your support. Who should it be for? How often should it meet? What sort of timings or venues? This could be the start of something.
Count me in!

One idea that I’ve been hoping to see in Manchester at some point is the “bank of common knowledge” that took place in Barcelona – a free exchange of ideas.

Well this seems to be going down well so far. Thanx to all of you who’ve contacted here – also had tweets and Fbook interest! Now we all just need to make it a reality. As things develop I’ll come back to you all – please let me know if you have any ideas about possible venues, whether it should be weekly/monthly and whether it would be in office hours?

Good luck with this Sarah. I’ve been involved in helping the Birmingham bloggers group get going and really enjoy Tuttle in Birmingham and London. It will work and you wont regret the effort that goes into it (most of the time!)

If there’s anyone from this side of the hill reading this, what about a Tuttle Club for Leeds or York? We need to make sure the North is fully represented! Let me know if you’re interested.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. Would be good to get people together to talk about what everyone’s working on, what they’ve been reading etc but also may be ask someone to lead a session or get a guest speaker in.
I’m happy to help organise, promote and find guests.
