Date for first social media cafe

socialm.jpg Manchester’s Social Media Cafe is officially underway with the first meeting to be held be on Tuesday, November 11.
The venue is still to be confirmed but will be a suitable pub in the Northern Quarter.
(On that note, this isn’t restricted to Manchester folk – if you have a social media passion and a willingness to travel to the city to participate, come along!)
At last night’s small get together at Commons, apart from the much beer consumed, there was some sharing of social networks, plenty of ideas about the future but, most importantly, a commitment to make this happen.
The feeling was that the group should meet monthly, that it should be outside normal office hours and that it is open and accessible to anyone with an interest in social media whether that’s as a user, supplier, creator, teacher or whatever – if social media’s your passion, this cafe should have something for you!
So, apart from a date, a venue and a buzz – everything else will come from those who get involved from now on. This blog will be used to pull together information around the cafe but of course there will be plenty of material accessible over time via the the myriad of social media platforms everyone is using.
On that topic, last night’s discussions revealed people using a whole host of platforms to communicate, create content, distribute or just hang out.
My particular favourites are all here but there were some new (to me) shared around the group last night including; Shooting People, a network for filmmakers, 12 Seconds TV does as it says, Vimeo, video sharing and Fanbox (which seemed to get a mixed amount of support/fear).
There’s now a Google group set up so people can join-up, see who else is involved, meet , purpose topics for discussion or whatever.
In the meantime, if anyone would like to speak at the first meeting (Nov 11), or want to nominate someone of interest that we could approach to speak, then please post details below.
Other than that – watch this space, post your own thoughts on the project and generally get involved as much as you feel able.

Sounds good. One point to make- I have never heard the phrase “social media” before, however I am a regular blogger and use various networking sites. I’m guessing that there’s a similarity to what I use and “social media”. Can you elaborate please?
    Cheers

    @ Matt
Yeah some people call it “participatory” media – i.e. any platform that people can participate with – twitter, plurk, facebook et al. Chris Brogan’s blog at http://www.chrisbrogan.com/ is always good on the topic. Look forward to seeing you at the SMC.
