C-charge debate over – but the arguments rage on!

Share photos on twitter with TwitpicThe MEN’s congestion charge debate has now drawn to a close but you will be able to see highlights at 9pm on Channel M.
It was, at times, a heated exchange here at Scott Place with Andy Crane chairing the discussion and the panellists Sir Richard Leese (council leader), Lis Phelan (chairman of the official `yes’ campaign), Graham Stringer MP and Trafford Council’s leader Susan Williams fielding the questions.
Whether or not Manchester suffers congestion, whether the bus lanes have caused those traffic problems and the differing tactics campaigners have been employing to further their causes were the main points of the debate.
I did a live blog of the main debate on the micro-blogging platform Twitter using the hash tag # C_debate which you which you can recap on, or contribute to, here.
(Sadly technical problems mostly did for the live video streaming but this blog will be updated with clips from the night, first thing in the morning.)
The print version of the paper will have full coverage tomorrow and, of course, our top political blogger David Ottewell will be updating with his thoughts here.

    David.
Can you please find out if this is true from your sources.
Susan Williams effectively said she will veto TIF tonight, even if the referendum shows a Yes in Trafford’
Apparently she will only accept a Yes in Trafford as well as every other borough. She will claim the referendum was biased.
Conseidring she demanded and voted for ther 7/3 vote, this is a very dangerous step.
If this happens she and the anti’s backing her will not only destrory a democratic election, but put the future of AGMAa and the whole of Gtr Manchester in Jeopardy.
Susan Williams must not be allowed to get away with this.

Hi, TIF supporter, During tonight’s debate, Susan Williams said all councils should abide by their voters decision.

I was watching that bit too. Susan Willians said that she will abide by the decision of her constituents and suggested that all other councils should do the same i.e.; if it’s yes overall but no in Trafford then she will block the scheme. I think that comment passed everyone else by though.

TIF supporter: David Ottewell has now cleared up this confusions and it’s as I posted – she says that all council leaders should abide by their electorates. See his full posting here: http://blogs.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/politics/2008/11/post_456.html
