Spotting the next Tony Wilson

wilson.jpg
So who is the next Tony Wilson? Does someone like him even exist at present or are we just stuck in the past even thinking along these lines?
Those are some of the issues which are to be debated tonight by a panel which includes writer, broadcaster and
cultural commentator John Robb; manager of Happy Mondays and
Simply Red, Elliott Rashman; Media psychologist Dr David A Holmes and Stevie Smith from Manchester based events agency Ear to the Ground.
I shall be there to bring you some live updates via @Sarah_Hartley as well as more coverage on this blog.
The debate is part of the Circuit Series, which is described as a live forum for Manchester’s ‘thinkers’ to get together; drink, dine and debate every Second Tuesday of the Month at The Circle Club.

Clearly, no-one is looking for the precise copy of Tony Wilson, for Manchester has now changed from where Wilson left it. What is being looked for then? The personality that Manchester could identify with? Well, this then looks like a quest for a new god or icon, some sort of authority figure, since the old had gone. The enterprises, perhaps? I remember reading some critical opinions of the late Tony’s business skills, it would be hard to ignore this in our business-savvy Noughties. So, yes, I think it’s old-fashioned to try and find the next Tony Wilson, but no doubt if the quest has started, the next Wilson will be found.
