Manchester woman blogs from Gaza – plus city demo plan

Manchester blogger Sarah Irving has posted today a first hand report from a fellow city dweller who is currently in Gaza.
And at her blog, Sarah also posts that there is a demo planned in Manchester for this Saturday.Update: Full details of arrangements for the demo now in here.
Photos on this page were captured by Flickr photographer MaLaaK..x during Monday’s protest outside the BBC offices on Oxford Road.
Reporting from heart of Gaza in November, Sharyn Lock, who reportedly travelled to the country on Free Gaza Movement boats in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade, reports on Sarah’s blog about an incident which happened in November when a Mosque came under fire.

It is not disproportionate at all – it seems according to balanced sources 80% of dead are Hamas members and therefore completely fair game, as they are 1. a terrorist organization as recognized by every civilized country 2. a group which has declared war on Israel therefore Israel is acting perfectly legally in responding 3. Hamas has inflicted endless attacks on Israel over the years in the forms of suicide bombs, rockets, shootings and kidnappings – thus Israel is perfectly within its rights to defend itself.
I think people have a very short sighted view of the crimes of Hamas – as they were the main force behind the bus bombs of several years ago.
People cannot consider members of enemy terrorist organizations as either innocent or victims.
Death is always tragic, but this is what war is. The civilian deaths are also tragic but they are proportionally lower than any significant conflict I think of having happened in decades if not longer.
Again what we see is the singling out of Israel for criticism and propaganda, despite Israel being far more moral and “well behaved” than any comparative examples- thus I must conclude logically that Israel is being held to a standard no other nation is held to – and thus as it is the only Jewish country and given mass history of anti-Jewish feeling – I must conclude these views come from racist dispositions. And those from Communist backgrounds have one of the strongest motivations for being self hating!

@Llan you state you are quoting “balances sources” but then fail to provide any evidence for the statements you make. Would it be possible for you to provide links to these sources? Without them your comment is simply opinion.

I’ve just witnessed a terrible Gaza protest in Manchester. The crowd was chanting abusive anti-Israeli slogans, there was a skull-and-cross-bones flag attached to a Menorah in Albert Square, there were Palestinian flags everywhere (many of which were held by non-Arab Brits) and the place was teeming with left-wing thugs and ageing hippies. Depressing and upsetting. Makes me ashamed to be a Brit.

R Mather, You must have been at a completely different demonstration to the one I attended. Firstly, the anti-Israeli slogans were not at all abusive, they simply stated some peoples belief that Israel is a racist state. Of course there were Palestinian flags everywhere, the aim was to show solidarity to those people (as a matter of fact I didn’t see any ‘non-arab’ brits carrying them but even so your comment sounds a little ‘suspect’ to me) As for the place ‘teeming with left-wing thugs and ageing hippies’ you are plain wrong and you’ve just ruined any chance of your observations being taken seriously. You’re right, you should be ashamed to be a Brit.

There’s now video from the demo in Albert Square – see newer postings on this blog. While it is only a short clip, there’s no evidence of any “thugs” or “hippies” or trouble.

It is ridiculous to claim that there were ‘thugs’ at this protest. If there was no violence then you are obviously judging people by your own prejudice.

    To Andrew et al
The Left in the UK and Europe would do well to take another look at the people they are in bed with. This alliance between the Left and radical Islam (which I witnessed in Manchester) is a dangerous trend that threatens not only the security of Israel but of all democratic nations who reserve the right to protect their citizens from extremists, anti-Semites and terrorists. So, yes, I am ashamed to be a Brit when I see (ignorant) people on these marches spew hatred towards Israel.
